The New Year may bring fresh starts, but it also brings icy grounds, rushed routines, and a spike in preventable workplace injuries. That is why it’s important to refocus on workplace safety year-round, especially the hazards we tend to overlook in our daily routines.
Occupational risks are a reality in the workplace, but few are as underestimated as slips, trips, and falls — everyday incidents that remain among the leading causes of workplace injuries and fatalities. According to OSHA, “Slips, trips, and falls consistently rank among the top three causes of work-related injuries,” a reminder that even simple missteps can result in serious consequences, including strains, fractures, and even death.

Slips
These occur when your footwear doesn’t have enough traction on the floor, causing your footing to suddenly give away and loss of balance. Common causes are:
Spills
Rain, snow, or ice
Smooth or waxed floors
Loose rugs or mats
Uneven ground/pavement
Lack of slip-resistant surfaces

Trips
When your foot hits an object or an uneven surface, causing you to lose balance suddenly. Common causes are:
Cluttered floors and tangled cables
Poor lighting/ obstructed view
Uncovered wires or hoses
Uneven ground or steps
Wrinkled carpets or mats
Open drawers, cabinets, or doors

Falls
These happen when you lose your balance and drop from a higher surface to a lower one, such as from a ladder, scaffolding, or platform. Common causes are:
Faulty or unstable ladders
Missing or damaged guardrails
Unsafe scaffolding
Carrying heavy items while climbing
Improper use of height-access equipment

How to Prevent Slips, Trips, and Falls
Prioritizing awareness and prevention of these common hazards is one of the most effective ways to strengthen your safety efforts and protect your team all year long. Many steps can be taken to avoid incidents from slips, trips, and falls, including:
Awareness and Discipline/Good Housekeeping: A safe workplace starts with a solid understanding of potential workplace hazards and good housekeeping. Staying diligent about clearing away clutter keeps floors clean and easy for everyone to navigate.
Adequate Lighting: For people to safely navigate through their workspaces, there needs to be sufficient lighting. Proper lighting should be installed in key access and exit points, including hallways, ramps, and stairways.
Safety Signage: Posting safety signage warns people of potential spills, open edges, or dangerous zones. Alerting them to be more aware of their surroundings and any safety hazards that could be present.
Proper Footwear: Wearing shoes with good traction and avoiding open-toed shoes helps to protect workers from slips and falls, falling objects, and hazardous substances.
Clear Walking Areas: Maintaining clear walkways is essential for avoiding incidents in a workplace. When walkways are free of clutter like cords, misplaced equipment, or other debris, it’s easier for people to move around safely without risk.
Wet Floor Policy: It is important to regularly check the ground for wet or icy spots, immediately clean them up, and post the correct, clear signage to keep everyone alert and safe.
